Russert's question was ridiculous and so is the entire analysis presented here. There never was an al Qaeda presence in Iraq before the U.S. invaded so there was nothing to "resurge" following a U.S. withdrawal.

Hillary Clinton was absolutely correct in telling Russert his hypothetical was not "reality." I would have been even more direct and used the words ridiculous, absurd or fiction.

When Saddam was in power he had a zero tolerance policy towards militant religious extremists like al Qaeda. He had them executed.

Iraq's ruling (Sunni) Baath Party was secular, and vigilant in guarding against any religious fundamentalist take over of government, as had happened in neighboring Iran.

Of course Iraq's majority Shia population would also oppose a militant Sunni group like al Qaeda operating in Iraq.

After the U.S. invaded an "al Qaeda in Iraq" group was tolerated since it was dedicated to defeating the U.S. military. Remnants of Saddam's Sunni regime eventually decided the U.S. occupation was less objectionable than the "al Qaeda in Iraq" terrorists, so they killed them.

As to Senator Clinton's shifting the conversation to Afghanistan, that too makes sense since that's where bin Laden and the al Qaeda terrorists were headquartered when the 9/11 attacks occurred.

Russert's question could not have been more bizarre if he had asked Clinton what she planned to do about all the Communists in Congress.

Interesting you would respond to this as Obama gets ready to deliver his Afghanistan speech. Funny how things have changed so much in so little time.

I'll tell you why Hillary Clinton does not like hypothetical questions. She doesn't like them because she is a practical women. Obama on the other hand is an intellectual, a deep thinker, and to him answering hypothetical questions is very natural, something he loves to do. Therefore I do not agree that she has exhibited cowardice. She is just impatient with questions she thinks are not real. However I do agree that if she should have answered that question, or tried to. She is not that wise I guess.

And Barack Obama appears much darker than real life in Hillary Clinton's ad.
