Please teach me how to read, but perhaps you need some writing lessons. Can we trade? Please explain the following: "Except for keeping people from shooting or robbing each other (injuring each other)." If a company creates a product or working conditions that injure someone, isn't that the realm of government. And please quit the "big government" crap. Just when the hell is government too big? Figure out a real answer to that one then go out and do something about it.

BTW it is the Democratic Party not the GOP that hosts a Jefferson-Jackson dinner.

Are you nuts? The full quote calls for MINIMAL GOVERNMENT!! Jefferson is clear: Except for keeping people from shooting or robbing each other (injuring each other), GOVT. SHOULD LEAVE PEOPLE ALONE! EMAIL ME AND I'LL TEACH YOU HOW TO READ. Anyone who favors big government is anti-Jeffersonian. YOU are anti-Jeffersonian. READ!!

Barry,

You are right on to point this out. The tension between Jefferson's beliefs and his actions as a slave owner have spawned more books and articles than I could list in five essays. For some enlightening commentary just do a search for Sally Hemmings.

The ironies fold back on one another when you add the misquote to this history.

BTW, my prediction that the misquote would become taken as gospel by some has come true. In addition, the misquote has apparently cost the governor little in Thomas Jefferson's home state.
