But that is the point of this essay. I used to think that about Cruise also, but this latest movie raises questions about whether his off-screen beliefs are influencing what he does on screen.

Neither Tom's religion nor his personal life really concern me. The fact is, he's good at what he does, and "Valkyrie" stands as a testament to that. What an actor does on his own time is of no interest to me; it's what he does on screen that I care about.

For me, as for many Americans, Cruise’s religion has not been an issue

I don't care about Tom Cruise, or this film.

But if you do, you should make yourself familiar with some of Scientology's history. In the US and Canada, covert operatives of Scientology's "Guardian's Office" infiltrated the national governments and stole documents, were caught and convicted. In Canada, Scientology as an organization was convicted of libel and drew the largest penalty ever exacted in that nation. In Great Britain, Scientology was convicted of horrendous harassment of Bonnie Woods.

I commend to your attention The Lippard Blog, http://lippard.blogspot.com/
which just today has covered three new articles in the Saint Petersburg Times that disclose new testimony from former high Scientology officials who have recently left the organization and have begun to speak out about their experiences.

Here is a suggested set of Google search terms for those who want to learn more about Scientology's long history of crime, abuse of its own members, fraud, barratry, and harassment:

Operation Snow White
Paulette Cooper
Lisa McPherson
Dennis Erlich
Keith Henson
